"Where do all the hippist meet? (South Street, South Street)
Where the dancin is elite (South Street, South Street)
Side by side we're loose and neat
When we're stompin down the street
Hurry down, baby she's the hippist street in town!(Oh baby)..."
-- The Orlons 1963
In colonial times, South Street marked the southern boundry of the city. From its beginnings, South Street was a popular retail area. Immigrants and newcomers to the city often found inexpensive lodging in the area, and bars and pubs abounded. Over time the street became known for men's retail clothing.
Today over 300 businesses line South Street. offering a dazzling variety of ecletic goods and services. If you're looking for some leatherwear, a tattoo or body piercing, you'll find it here. By the same token, you can find stained glass shops, funky clothing or that hard to find record or tape. Restaurants, bars and clubs are found up and down the street alongside galleries, music stores and delis.
South Street really comes alive at night and especially in good weather, when young people from all over the region come to Philly to see and be seen on the hippist street in town.
