Dedicated in 2003, the Irish Memorial is located at Front and Chestnut Streets (near Penn's Landing). The memorial is dedictated to the more than one million who perished during the Irish famine ("an ghorta mor"- "the great hunger" ) of 1845 - 1850. Millions of Irish people fled Ireland during the famine and for many Philadelphia was a port of destination.
The memorial, created by artist Glenna Goodacre includes 35 life size figures and is about 30 feet long and 12 feet high
